The Philadelphia Eagles' 2026 draft class officially takes the field this weekend for rookie minicamp. While it's just shorts and no pads, there's still plenty to learn about this year's crop of newcomers.
Makai Lemon's First Impression
All eyes will be on second-round pick Makai Lemon. The USC product is expected to compete for the slot receiver role immediately, and this will be our first chance to see him run routes in an Eagles uniform.
Key things to watch:
- Route crispness and separation ability
- Rapport with the quarterbacks
- Understanding of Kellen Moore's concepts
Eli Stowers at Tight End
Third-round pick Eli Stowers talked about wanting to do "the dirty work" - now we'll see if his blocking translates to the NFL level. The Texas tight end has the athleticism; it's about refining technique.
Under-the-Radar Names
Keep an eye on these players who could surprise:
Cole Payton, QB - The North Dakota State quarterback waited four years for his chance. His command of the huddle and accuracy will be worth monitoring.
Uar Bernard, DL - The International Pathway player is raw but has intriguing traits. Think Jordan Mailata's early days.
UDFA Competition
Eight undrafted free agents will compete for roster spots. History tells us at least one or two will make the 53. Look for players who stand out in drills and show understanding of the system.
What We Can't Learn Yet
It's important to remember what we CAN'T evaluate at rookie minicamp:
- Physical play (no pads, no contact)
- Stamina and conditioning over time
- Competition against veterans
The Bottom Line
Rookie minicamp is about acclimation more than evaluation. The real assessments come during OTAs and training camp. But first impressions matter, and this weekend will give us our initial glimpse at the future.
