The Philadelphia Eagles made a major splash during the 2026 NFL Draft, trading for Pro Bowl edge rusher Jonathan Greenard and immediately signing him to a four-year, $100 million extension. But it wasn't just the money that brought Greenard to Philadelphia.

It was a text message from Jalen Hurts.

"We're Gonna Get One"

In his introductory press conference, Greenard revealed what sold him on Philadelphia - and it started with seeing the Lombardi Trophies at the NovaCare Complex.

"It moved me so much. I was in Minnesota, I didn't see any hardware there. I was in Houston, didn't see any hardware. So I actually see it and hear guys talk about it, you know, Jalen texted me and was like, 'We're gonna get one,' and it's not just talk. This is how everybody carries themselves around the building. It's the standard, the standard is the standard."

That simple message from Hurts encapsulates everything about the Eagles' culture. It's not about hoping to win. It's about expecting to win.

"I Want to Do Dirty Work"

Greenard isn't coming to Philadelphia to coast on his reputation. Despite recording 24.5 sacks in 2023 and 2024 combined, earning a Pro Bowl trip, he's hungry for more.

When asked about facing elite teammates like Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata in practice every day, Greenard's eyes lit up:

"These are Super Bowl Champions, these are some All-Pros, and arguably one of the greatest tackles ever in Lane Johnson, and obviously Jordan Mailata is going to be in that conversation really soon. It was a great experience, and now to be teaming up with these guys, going against these greats in practice, it's only iron sharpens iron. I want to do dirty work, I want to go against the best of the best."

Bouncing Back From a Down Year

Greenard's 2025 season in Minnesota didn't go as planned. After back-to-back 12-sack seasons, he managed just three sacks while dealing with injuries. He's not making excuses.

"Having 12 and 12 and then obviously had the down year, that was not up to my standard by any means. I'm coming for more."

He added: "I still feel like I rushed well. I still feel like I was still getting back there. I feel like my moves didn't drop off at all."

The motivation is clear. And Greenard made one thing perfectly clear about his drive:

"The day somebody's got to tell me to get to the quarterback, that's when I need to hang it up."

A Team-First Mentality

Perhaps most impressive is Greenard's willingness to put the team above personal stats. When asked about getting back to double-digit sacks, he pivoted to the bigger picture.

"It's not necessarily all about me getting back to double digits. It's more so how can we affect the quarterback? If somebody else, let's say Nolan or J.C. or J.D. gets it, I'm more than happy. It's the same. As long as we affect in the game, I promise you we're gonna be in a good spot."

That's the kind of attitude that fits perfectly in Philadelphia's locker room.

The Trade Details

The Eagles sent a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick to Minnesota for Greenard and a seventh-round pick. They then locked him up with the massive four-year, $100 million extension that includes $50 million guaranteed.

It's a significant investment, but for a 28-year-old pass rusher with proven production, it's exactly the type of move championship teams make.

The Bottom Line

Jonathan Greenard didn't just join the Eagles for the money or the market. He joined because he saw hardware in the building and a quarterback who texted him with championship expectations before he even signed.

That's the Eagles way. And now Greenard is ready to do the dirty work to add another Lombardi Trophy to that collection.
